Long distance phone calls may not be possible from properties that do have telephones but you can make local calls and receive long distance calls.
Long distance calls can be made at internet cafes. In Akumal, Cyber Akumal is located near the front entrance of Akumal. There are also internet cafes in Playa, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.
When making international calls, dial 00 + country code + area code + number. Country code for US and Canada is 1.
To dial a local cell phone, enter 044 + area code + 7 digit number.

To make a call at a public pay phone requires phone cards for local and international calls. Purchase a Ladatel phone card (check the rates, usually $10 pesos per minute to the US). Phone cards can be purchased in most convenience stores.
